Boy Scout log Cabins - Camp Oyo

 Camp Oyo, Ohio.

  1. I remember first seeing the Camp Oyo blockhouse when I was probably about 3. It was the late 50's and my grandmother's church had rented the camp for a picnic. The cabins central location in the camp, its height - 2 stories - and its imposing symbol of strength imprinted on me. Architecture and craftsmanship still do that to. I also remember my mom taking me into the ladies changing room at the pool to strip down to my briefs - we didn't think to bring swim suits. I don't think I wanted to get in the pool, but there were others who evidently thought that I did. 10 years later I would see the Blockhouse again as an Explorer scout. Our post was setting up tents for a Camporee across the road as well as managing traffic and access control. We felt like big stuff because we got to stay in the Blockhouse instead of the tents. I'm now 65, living in GA, and planning some backpacking trips. I may have to go back to Shawnee State Forest, Camp Oyo, and, of course, the Blockhouse.
