Movies with Log Cabins - Drums along the Mohawk.

Have not done one of these in a while.

Made in 1939, it still stands the test of time.

While filmed out west the sets and location are very well done.

Not only are the log cabins nice, but the for and stone buildings are well done also.

Acting is pretty typical of the period, and a very early Henry Fonda movie, but like with most movies of this period, you really have to enjoy the character actors.

Nice still from the movie.

Movies with log cabins - "The Bourne Legacy"

This part of the movie is suppose to take place in Alaska. But I don't know if it was really shot there or not.

We don't get to see much of the interior, but the outside looks pretty cool.

It gets destroyed in the movie so it was probably just built for the show.

Movies with Log Cabins, two this time.

while I liked both movies, the log cabins made way to brief appearances as far as I am concerned

"Shooter", way out west.

"The Accountant", way out . . . east.

The tiny little out building, far left.

Movies, ah, commercials with log cabins. . .

The new Marks & Spencer's commercial is making a big hit most places. I don't know if it is the sentiment or how attractive Mrs. Claus is, but none the less, it is popular this year.

And it has a log cabin. Probably all Staged and CG it is, once again, none the less, neat.

The interiors are warm and inviting, and the exterior is really cool.

Movies with Log Cabins - 'Songcatcher-

Made in 2000, 'Songcatcher' is based on the life of Olive Dame Campbell.
Set in the southern highland mountains of North Carolina, Dr Penleric, a musicologist, who by accident, at least in the film, discovers once thought lost folk songs of English and Scottish heritage and makes it her goal to capture as many as she can.

While the film spends to much time on the effects of same sex love and how it is viewed in such rural areas the story is still rather good and makes one want to know more about the history of the rural song collection covered in the film. Acting by the key performers is good, and some of the singing and music is very good.

While most of the images of log cabins are of the interior or close up views of at least one cabin, you do get a very good sense for what it was like living in those conditions well into the 20th century.

The hardships and beauty of life in rural Appalacia is center in the film

Movies with log cabins - The Adventures of the Wilderness Family I, II and III

The late 60's and early 70's found a very big 'back to earth' movement in America. Getting away from the 'rat race' was a big theme. And from this movement came the family oriented movies about the 'Wilderness Family'.
Very Disney like in thier views of nature and wild animals the movies were none-the-less fun and had great locations. Actor Robert Logan is best remembered for these films.
Just picked these up for my daughter and I to watch when we stay out at the cabin.

The family started with a small cabin, then moved into a bigger one.

You can see the smaller cabin in the back ground of this and the next image.

Movies with Log Cabins - "Foxfire" 1987

It's kind of like bagpipes, you either love John Denver or you don't. I happen to love his music.
While he did several films, he could never be considered a great actor.
At least in the 1987 film 'Foxfire' he played close to kind as a country singer.
The movie also starred Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, a couple of Americas acting elite. Actually they were respectively English and Canadian but they were very much associated with American Theatre.

Most of the film is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains and takes place on the old family homestead.
While it is hard to find photos of the log cabin used, the cabins is featured a lot in the movie.

Log cabins in movies - 'The Journey of August King'

While I only caught part of the movie, I came away with some good images of a log cabin.
I could not find filming locations for the film other than 'North Carolina', so  . . . I don't know if the cabins were real or only just set pieces. Either way, they appeared very nice.
The movie is about a farmer helping a run away slave and show very well Early American Appalachia.

 Very rustic in it's appearance.

The shingle roof is excellent.
The log gable's suggest an old cabin. If it is not original and only a set piece some good research was done by the crew.
North Carolina provided a beautiful setting for the film.

Speaking of movies with Log Cabins - I forgot about this one. . . sort of. . .

I have posted my history with this log chapel a few times on this blog.

I recently remembered, in connection with the 'Log Cabins in Movies' theme, that at one time it had been used by a Japanese film company as the wedding chapel for Laura Ingalls Wilder in a documentary they were making.
I never saw the movie so I don't know if the scenes made the final cut or not.

The chapel was also used on the cover of a CD for a local artist, and held several weddings.

Movies with log cabins - Legends of the Fall

Based on a very short story, Legends of the Fall showed some stunning vistas and a troubled story.
Filmed mostly in British Columbia the cabin was incredible.

Movies with log cabins - 'Wild'

While more about getting over loss than about getting lost in the wilderness, occasionally we get a glimpse of the wild in 'Wild'.
But that never was the point of the book or the movie.

Most of the film was shoot in Oregon and many other locations had to stand in for actual spots on the PCT.

But the film did feature a few log cabins in a site standing in for Kennedy Meadows.

Paulina Lake Lodge stood in for Kennedy Meadows. And we do get a glimpes of a couple of the cabins in the film.

And a log cabin from the real Kennedy Meadows.

Movies with Log Cabins in them - Richard Proenneke and 'Alone in the Wilderness'

In 1968 Dick Proenneke would start his almost thirty year odyssey of living alone in the Alaskan wilds.
For much of his time up there he record his adventure on film.
It is a wonderful film put together years later from Dick's footage by Bob Swerer Productions.

I have seen the first film and am looking forward to the second one.

Richard working on his cabin.

Winter in his cabin.

The National Park Service maintains the cabin and visitors can discover it for themselves.

Movies with log cabins in them - well, sort of - 'A Walk in the Woods'

Since I have been talking about log Adirondack Shelters these last few posts, this movie does meet the qualifications for this blog.

Starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, this is a fun outdoor romp for these two veteran screen legends.

Not quite measuring up to the book, it is still a fun movie, and Redford does what he has done best in several of his most recent features, play back-up to someone else's performance. Although Redford is fun in this movie, it is Nolte's show.
The film does not deal so much with the phyiscal hardships of the trail, but more the personal growth of the characters.
Not a great movie, but a fun movie.

Several scenes take place in or around Adirondack type shelters.

Movies with Log Cabins in them - #1 - "An Unfinished Life"

2005

Not a great movie, but it was fun to watch two old pros working together.

Morgan Freeman's characters cabin was pretty cool.
